The Chemical Supply Network in Bitterfeld-Wolfen

In the ChemiePark Bitterfeld-Wolfen about 50 companys are operating plants and production lines. These companys are supplied with raw materials and base chemicals via an extensive pipeline network. Within that network Akzo Nobel Base Chemicals is supplier for chlorine, hydrogen chloride and caustic soda to all customers in the chemical park.

Closed Loop Integrated Chlorine Network in Bitterfeld

The three companies Akzo Nobel Base Chemicals, Degussa and Heraeus-Tenevo exchange raw materials and products via pipeline. Akzo Nobel produces hydrogen chloride from chlorine by electrolysis. Hydrogen chloride is used by Degussa for the production of silicontetrachloride. This in turn is the raw material for the production of high purity quartz glass by Heraeus-Tenevo. During this process, hydrogen chloride is again generated and absorbed in caustic soda from Akzo Nobel. The resulting sodium chloride containing brine can be reused in the electrolysis process after purification. That way chlorine is kept in a completely closed loop.
