Chlor-Alkali Electrolysis

Using the process of chlor-alkali electrolysis, an aqueous solution of sodium chloride is electrochemically converted into chlorine, caustic soda and hydrogen by an electric current. Our raw material sodium chloride is basically the same as the table salt that is used in everyday life.

Three technologies are currently still in use:

  • the mercury process
  • the diaphragm process
  • the membrane process

The membrane process is the most modern technology.
