Bleaching lye is an alkaline, corrosive, pale yellow solution of sodium hypochlorite in water. It is generated by absorption of chlorine in caustic soda and used as detergent and disinfectant. Like chlorine bleaching lye is very reactive and strongly oxidising but easier to handle than gaseous chlorine.
