Hydrochloric acid is a colourless, strongly acidic, corrosive and pungent smelling solution of hydrogen chloride in water. It is one of the most important mineral acids and is produced in large volume. It is an (impure) by-product of many organic reactions. Akzo Nobel Base Chemicals in Bitterfeld produces very pure hydrochloric acid by direct reaction of hydrogen and chlorine in the presence of water. Hydrochloric acid is used for the etching of metals, the treatment of ore and the production of metal chlorides.
