Hydrogen chloride is a colourless, pungently smelling gas that fumes in moist air. It reacts with water giving hydrochloric acid and is used for the production of hydrochloric acid and metal chlorides. Hydrogen chloride is often an (inpure) by-product of chemical reactions. Akzo Nobel Base Chemicals in Bitterfeld produces hydrogen chloride of high purity by the direct reaction of chlorine and hydrogen.
